Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a QR Code and How Does It Work?

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information in a pattern of black and white squares. Unlike a standard barcode that can only hold a few dozen characters, a QR code can encode thousands of characters — making it suitable for URLs, contact details, WiFi credentials, and more.

When you scan a QR code with your phone camera, the camera's software reads the pixel pattern and decodes the embedded data instantly. Modern iPhones (iOS 11+) and Android phones (Android 9+) can scan QR codes directly from the native camera app — no separate app needed.

Static vs Dynamic QR Codes

Static QR codes encode the data directly into the pixel pattern. They never expire, work offline, and require no server to function. The tradeoff is that the content cannot be changed after creation — if you want a different URL, you create a new QR code. This is what clkr.me generates.

Dynamic QR codes use a short redirect URL baked in. The actual destination can be changed later in a dashboard. They also provide scan analytics. However, they require a paid subscription with most providers, and if your subscription lapses, the codes stop working — a serious risk for printed materials. For most use cases, a static QR code is the reliable and sensible choice.

Best Practices for QR Code Scanning

Always test your QR code before printing or distributing it widely. Print at minimum 2cm × 2cm (about 0.8 inches square) for reliable scanning. Ensure high contrast between foreground and background — the classic black-on-white is always the safest choice. Avoid placing QR codes on curved surfaces, highly reflective materials, or areas that receive heavy wear. For business cards and flyers, download the SVG version for perfect print quality at any size.
