How to Shorten a URL on Your Phone — iPhone and Android Guide — clkr.me

Most URL shortening guides are written with a desktop computer in mind. But the reality is that most people who need to shorten a URL are doing it on their phone — they want to share something from their browser directly into WhatsApp, Instagram, or a message thread. This guide is written entirely for mobile users, covering iPhone and Android separately with the exact steps for each.

You Do Not Need a Separate App

clkr.me is a fully mobile-responsive website. You do not need to download anything. The entire process happens in your existing mobile browser — Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or any other browser you already use. The interface is designed to work cleanly on small screens, with tap targets sized appropriately for fingers rather than mouse cursors.

Shortening a URL on iPhone

These instructions apply to iPhone running iOS 14 or later, using Safari. The steps are nearly identical in Chrome for iOS.

  1. Open the page you want to share. Navigate to the article, product, video, or any other URL in Safari.
  2. Copy the URL. Tap the address bar at the top of Safari. The URL becomes highlighted and selected in full automatically. Tap Copy from the popup menu that appears above the address bar.
  3. Open a new tab. Tap the tabs button (the square icon at the bottom right of Safari) and tap the + icon to open a new tab, or tap the address bar and type clkr.me directly.
  4. Go to clkr.me. In the address bar of the new tab, type clkr.me and tap Go on the keyboard.
  5. Paste your URL. Tap the input field in the centre of the page. Tap and hold briefly until the paste menu appears. Tap Paste.
  6. Tap Shorten. The blue Shorten button generates your 6-character short link in under a second.
  7. Copy your short link. Tap the blue Copy button that appears next to your short link.
  8. Share it. Switch to WhatsApp, Instagram, Messages, or any other app and paste your short link from the clipboard.

Clipboard tip: Your copied short link stays on the iPhone clipboard until you copy something else. You can switch between apps freely — open clkr.me, copy the short link, switch to WhatsApp, paste, and send without losing the link.

Shortening a URL on Android

These instructions apply to Android using Chrome. The steps are similar for other Android browsers including Samsung Internet and Firefox for Android.

  1. Open the page you want to share. Navigate to the URL in Chrome on your Android device.
  2. Copy the URL. Tap the address bar at the top of Chrome. On most Android devices, the URL is shown in a condensed form — tapping it expands the full URL and highlights it. You can also tap and hold the URL text, then tap Select All followed by Copy.
  3. Open a new tab. Tap the number in the square (the tab count) and tap the + button to open a new tab. Navigate to clkr.me.
  4. Paste and shorten. Tap the input field, long-press, and tap Paste. Tap the blue Shorten button.
  5. Copy the short link. Tap the Copy button next to your generated short link.
  6. Share. Use the Android back button or task switcher to return to your previous app and paste the short link.
